The Travel List: Celebrating a birthday at Walt Disney World

Every birthday is special, but this year I spent my birthday in the happiest place on earth!

Make sure you look out for these special birthday treats:

Birthday button

If you’re celebrating anything whilst visiting Disney, make sure to get yourself a celebration button. There are special buttons for birthdays, anniversaries, 1st visit and happily ever after or “I’m Celebrating” buttons which are left blank for you. The best one I saw was a I’m Celebrating…successful IVF!

The button is your ticket to the ultimate birthday, every cast member that you interact with wishes you a happy birthday. Make it fun and set yourself a challenge to receive as many happy birthdays as you can… I managed 28 throughout the day. By wearing your birthday button you’re opening the opportunities for some special perks throughout the day…

Special character interactions

Celebrating and wearing your button means that characters will interact with you differently than any other time. The best interaction I had was with Alice in Magic Kingdom, as soon as she saw my birthday button she asked me whether it was my birthday or unbirthday, which sparked a conversations about unbirthdays and un-unbirthdays in Wonderland.

Unique Disney photos

As part of our Disney holiday, we had the Memory Maker included. This little gem of magic means that all your photos taken by professional Disney photographers, including ride photos, can be downloaded via your MyDisneyExperience App. The Disney photographers have lots of fun ideas for poses and also some hidden surprises!

Whilst watching Mickey’s Royal Friendship Fayre we spotted a Disney photographer with a huge birthday button, the perfect photo opportunity in front of Cinderella’s Castle

Character signed birthday cards

Staying in a Disney Resort hotel, we were welcomed with a celebration card from Mickey Mouse himself. For my birthday, I wanted to dine in the Be Our Guest Restaurant, with of course the Grey Stuff cupcake as my birthday cake! Our server noticed that it was my birthday and brought over a card from Belle and the Beast and led everyone near us in singing Happy Birthday to me.
Birthday cakes

Celebrating a birthday means…cake! Lots of Cake! When we made our dining reservations we were asked if we were celebrating anything, throughout our holiday we had two birthdays, and so were lucky to have a few cakes!

We also had a free desert in Columbia Harbour, plus a free starbucks!

Of course, having your birthday isn’t just about the freebies and there are people who actively seek out as much as they can, but the extra detail can make a Disney birthday even more special.
